Hand Stripping

Hand stripping is a type of grooming method that removes excess hair from your dogs coat. The difference between clipping and hand-stripping is that not only is hand-stripping done by hand, but it removes coat from the root and not just the top layer so a new coat is able to grow in.

Each time you clip a dog’s coat instead of hand stripping, you are just taking off the top layer of dead fur rather than removing it from the roots. As a result, the coat may become duller in texture and colour with each clipping in certain breeds, which is why many people consider hand stripping to be preferable. However only certain coat types can have this procedure done to them.

If you decide that you would like to try having you pooch hand stripped it will only be effective if they have never been clippered before, and is best if they start this grooming method when still a puppy.

We can not hand strip your pooch if it has already been clippered so it is important you make this decision before taking it to a professional groomer.

However if you decide stripping is not for you clipping can take place after the age of 18 months old. Because this method is mainly used for show dogs and they are not neutered, if you do have your pooch neutered it can change their coat condition and could result in their coat becoming non strippable.

There are many different types of coats that can be stripped these being all wired hair coated dogs and some spaniels, schnauzers and other working breeds. We have found that there are two different types of coats that we can strip some being the wired hair that comes out and leaves a smooth back and others being soft hair that is stripped out of the softer coated dogs, these being spaniels etc. and still leaving a neat smooth back.

The type of equipment that we use to strip a dogs coat are called stripping knifes and coat kings. The pictures below show what they look like. They come in different sizes and have different amounts of teeth/blades in each comb.
